It’s a new year, a fresh start, a metaphorical wiping clean of the slate to start over, to start fresh. Around this time of year there’s a lot of talk about how December 31 is no different than January 1, and a flip of the calendar doesn’t turn us into someone else. And sure, that’s true. But there’s something beautiful about the opportunity that comes with a new year. It’s a chance to mentally wipe away the hardships and failures of the last year and to look ahead to a new year with new hopes and dreams. Not that we’re pretending the past trials weren’t real and that they don’t have lasting impact, but that we’re offered the incentive to switch our focus to what lies ahead.
